Sd.Kfz.2 Kleines Kettenkrad

Let me start this out by stating that I am no expert when it comes to modeling. I am just an average builder who decided to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Prior to this, I only had very limited scratch building experience, mostly just adding minor details to kits. All work done on this kit was accomplished with basic hand tools and a Dremel.

I was very excited when I first saw the news of this kit being released. I have always loved the looks of the Sd.Kfz.2 Kettenkrad. Originally, DML released this as a pre-built for the 1/6 scale action figure collectors. This original release included the engine and cooling system to fill up the hull. Fast forward approximately 6 months to Christmas of 2007 and my daughter gives me the Kettenkrad kit as a gift. I was quite surprised to see the kit in person, the box is huge. I had never seen the kit before that moment.

Upon opening the box, I immediately dug through the many bags of parts (on this kit, the parts were all separated from the sprues and packaged in bags.) I found a well packaged (in foam) resin transmission and battery, but what was noticeably missing was the engine.

What was going on here, I had seen the nice engine in the prebuilt, and why wasn’t it included in the kit? I did a little research and sure enough, the engine and cooling system were never included with the kit, I had just assumed they would be there. I contacted DML to see if there was any way to purchase the engine and accessories, but was disappointed to find out that they were not available.

This is where I decided to step outside the box. I figured why not try to scratch build the engine and other details that were missing. I do not have them now, so if it doesn’t work out, I am not really out anything. I remembered that one of my friends in my local model club had the DML 1/9 version of the Kettenkrad, which include the details I wanted to add. I contacted him to see if he still had the kit and if I could borrow it. Luckily, he still had the kit and let me borrow it.
